University of St Andrews postgraduate student Trevor Binau secured a remarkable victory in the 74th Boyd Quaich Memorial Golf tournament, the first time a St Andrews student has won the tournament since 2016.

The Boyd Quaich Memorial Golf tournament is an international student event hosted by the University of St Andrews at the Home of Golf, attracting competitors from Australia, Asia, Africa, the USA, Canada and Europe.

Trevor, a postgraduate marketing student and Saints Golf Performance Scholar from Columbus, Ohio, clinched the title by four strokes ahead of defending champion Ben Willis of Edge Golf College, Portugal.

Faced with mixed weather conditions, Trevor began slowly by shooting a 74 in the first round. Quickly gaining momentum, he fired a remarkable 4-under 68 in the second round over the Old Course, followed by an even more impressive 6-under 65 on the New Course. Trevor’s outstanding performance secured him a four-shot lead heading into the final round.

On the final day of the competition, which took place on the Old Course, Trevor battled the wind to beat many local and international competitors, ending the tournament with a birdie on the final hole.

Reflecting on his triumph, Trevor said: “It is an honour to win the 74th Boyd Quaich. I grew up admiring St Andrews and the Old Course, and to win here in my last event as a student is truly amazing. I am so thankful for everyone in my life who has helped make this possible. It is truly something that I will never forget.”

Ian Muir, Director of Golf at St Andrews, added: “Trevor has demonstrated his winning potential throughout the year, and it’s fantastic to see him finally clinch victory. His hard work and dedication have truly paid off, and I am absolutely thrilled that he achieved this milestone in his final tournament as a student. Winning on the historic Old Course at St Andrews and capping it off with a birdie on the final hole is the perfect conclusion. I hope these memories will last a lifetime.”

The Boyd Quaich was established in 1946 and is one of the longest running international student golf tournaments in the world. It is played in memory of brothers and University of St Andrews alumni Quentin and Anthony Boyd, who were killed in action during the Second World War.

The tournament is organised by the University of St Andrews and receives significant support from the Golf Development department of the Royal & Ancient, the St Andrews Links Trust, and The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews
