Election success for sports staff

Wednesday 24 June 2009

Members of sports staff at the University of St Andrews have been elected to top Scottish Universities Sport committees.

Following the AGM at the recent Scottish Universities Sport (SUS) annual conference, the University will now be represented on all of the SUS committees which help to shape sport and physical activity for universities in Scotland.

Director of Sport and Exercise, Stephen Stewart, was elected to the SUS Executive Council – the governing body of Scottish Universities Sport responsible for the strategic policy of the organisation.

Sports Development Manager Gary Brankin will join the SUS Competitions Committee, focusing on delivering competitive sporting opportunities to all students in higher education institutions throughout Scotland.

He said, “This is the first time that we have been so involved and it shows that we as a University are actively helping SUS to improve sport and physical activity opportunities.”

Activities and Fitness Programmes Manager Lyndsay Gallacher will be working on providing more opportunities for students, staff and members of the community to participate in physical activity as part of the SUS Physical Activity Committee.

Athletic Union President Sam Roberts was elected to the SUS Professional Development Committee charged with ensuring that the sector works together and shares good practice, while Debby Sargent, Performance Sports Manager, has begun a fresh initiative for Scottish Universities Sport and is now leading the new SUS Performance Committee.

Stephen Stewart commented, “This raises the profile of St Andrews as a key sporting University in Scotland, and gives us a chance to actively engage and be centrally involved in the policy making and major decisions that are affecting University sport on all levels.”
