Global Fellowship Scheme welcomes leading international researchers to St Andrews

Monday 29 September 2025

Since 2019, the University has welcomed outstanding international researchers through its Global Fellowship Scheme. In 2025–2026, this tradition continues, with 21 new Fellows joining our academic community. Representingcountries including Burkina Faso, Japan, Norway, and Vietnam, these scholars will contribute innovative research, fresh perspectives, and global expertise to the University.

The scheme comprises three distinct strands, each designed to attract outstanding talent. The Global Fellowship welcomes international academics who are recognised as significant contributors to their fields or as emerging leaders. The Senior Global Fellowship is aimed for eminent scholars with an established international reputation, nominated by University Schools. Meanwhile, the Global Fellowship (Education) highlights leading researchers and practitioners in education and pedagogy, also nominated internally, ensuring that excellence in teaching and learning is celebrated alongside research achievements.

Speaking about the new awards, Professor Tom Brown, Vice-Principal (Research, Collections and Innovation), said: “Now in its seventh year, the Global Fellowship Scheme has attracted distinguished international scholars to St Andrews since 2019, and with this new cohort the University will have hosted more than 90 Fellows. Each year, the scheme supports individuals who advance our world-class research and education while reinforcing St Andrews’ position as a vibrant intellectual hub for global scholars. This year’s exceptional cohort, drawn from six continents, will enrich our community with their diverse perspectives and expertise, and we look forward to building lasting friendships and collaborative partnerships with them.”

Adding to this, Professor Claire Peddie, Vice-Principal Education (Proctor), speaking specifically about the Global Fellowship (Education) strand, said: Global Fellowships serve to facilitate the exchange of pedagogical development and curriculum innovation, expediating the professionalisation of educational excellence and developing international networks.

These fellowships enable academics to engage in meaningful discourse with international experts, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and the dissemination of best educational practices. Furthermore, they contribute to our scholarly community by enriching dialogue through many activities such as seminars and workshops, where pioneering ideas and advancements in educational methodologies are shared and, where relevant, integrated into our curriculum.”
