Graduate wins Young Software Engineer of the Year Award

Computer Science graduate Verity Powell has been named a winner at the Young Software Engineer of the Year Awards.
A former player for the University’s Women’s 1XV Rugby team, Verity drew inspiration from her experience of underfunding in women’s sport. Her Senior Honours project, “Video Analytics for Rugby Skills Training,” merges her passions for sport and technology, using computer vision to analyse rugby conversion kicks and provide feedback based on biomechanics and coaching research.
Nominated by the School of Computer Science earlier this year, Verity’s work was recognised at ScotSoft 2025, Scotland’s leading tech conference held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
The Young Software Engineer of the Year Awards honour the best undergraduate software projects across Scotland, with St Andrews continuing its strong record of producing innovative and impactful computing talent.
