The University of St Andrews has begun the process to elect a new Chancellor, following the sad death earlier this year of Lord Campbell of Pittenweem.

Lord Menzies Campbell, “Ming” to all who knew him, was St Andrews’ Chancellor from his election to office in 2006 until his death in September.

The Chancellor’s role is broadly ceremonial, presiding at graduation ceremonies and at the twice-yearly meetings of the General Council, the body of alumni and senior academic staff who, under statute, elect the Chancellor.

Members of the General Council, including graduates of St Andrews, professors and certain other senior academic staff, will shortly be invited to register to vote in the election which will be held from 16 to 22 February 2026.

Although the position does not carry executive authority or power over the University Court or executive, the postholder plays an important ambassadorial role, promoting the University’s interests and reputation nationally and globally and supporting efforts in philanthropic fundraising.

Candidates should be senior figures in public life, with outstanding achievements in their field and the ability to command respect across the University community and beyond; a strong commitment to higher education; and a deep appreciation of the values, aims and objectives of the University of St Andrews.

The appointment will be for a period of 10 years and is unremunerated, although the University will reimburse reasonable expenses incurred.

Candidates must be nominated by a minimum of 25 members of the General Council and cannot be members of staff or matriculated students at the University.  Nominations must be received by 5pm on Friday 9 January 2026. Further details of the election process and rules can be found on the General Council webpage.

Previous Chancellors of St Andrews include Sir Kenneth Dover, Stanley Baldwin, Henry Dundas, James Kennedy, and Henry Wardlaw.
