Biggest alumni event in university’s history

Monday 22 May 2000

Over 300 alumni of the University of St Andrews will descend on the town next month for the biggest celebration of its kind in the University’s history.

The Alumni Millennium Weekend, to be held from 23 to 25 June 2000, has attracted interest from as far as Canada, the US, Switzerland and Brazil, as well as attracting large numbers of alumni closer to home. The weekend coincides with the meeting of the graduates’ association (the General Council) and the annual reunion of the After Many Days Club. The highlight of the Alumni Weekend will be a black-tie Millennium Ball, which will be held on Saturday 24 June. The Ball will begin with the Beating of the Retreat in St Salvator’s Quadrangle and marquees behind Lower College Hall will be the venue for the remainder of the evening. Entertainment will include live music, ceilidh and disco and a cash bar will be in operation throughout the night. Ice cream from local shop, Jannettas, and breakfast served in the early hours will also be on offer.

The weekend will also include other events, which all alumni are welcome to attend. The programme will begin with an alumni reception on the evening of Friday 23 June at the new Gateway building. Various talks focusing on University life will be held in St Salvator’s Quadrangle on Saturday 24 June between 2pm and 5 pm and Sunday service will be held on Sunday 25 June in St Salvator’s Chapel at 10.30 am, hosted by the After Many Days Club.

Alumni Relations Officer, Jennifer Hodge believes the event will be a weekend to remember – “This event has provided the perfect excuse for alumni to get together again in St Andrews. Our alumni are our best supporters and ambassadors and it is wonderful to host an event that is all about celebrating their link with St Andrews and reacquainting them with the University. All alumni, friends and guests are welcome to attend and we hope the weekend will lead to a number of future reunions.”

Programmes for the weekend and tickets for the Ball are available from the University of St Andrews’ Alumni Relations Office, 82 North Street, St Andrews, KY16 9AL (telephone (01334) 462110).
