Cycling distinction for St Andrews
Efforts to encourage cycling at the University of St Andrews – including a bike loan scheme, maintenance sessions and social events – have been recognised with a special award.
Proctor Professor Lorna Milne accepted the Cycle Friendly Campus Award from Cycling Scotland on behalf of the University at a special Bike to Work Breakfast today (Wednesday 12 April).
The Award, from Scotland’s national cycling organisation, recognises the efforts of Scotland’s colleges and universities to promote cycling as an accessible and convenient travel choice.
Professor Milne said: “I’m delighted to accept the Cycle Friendly Campus Award from Cycling Scotland. It is because our University is not a campus but based in the beautiful town of St Andrews that our cycling team have worked hard to make sure our staff and students can cycle safely and with courtesy as they make their way around the town.”
Paul Wright, Cycling Scotland’s Behaviour Change Manager, praised the University for its great commitment to cycling, presenting the award with distinction – a higher level of the award in recognition of the extra efforts made by the University.
He said: “The University has shown great commitment to getting more people cycling around campus and I am really pleased to present the award, with distinction. I look forward to working with the University in the future to ensure staff and students can continue to travel confidently and conveniently.”
The University’s sustainability team, Transition, introduced measures including a bike loan scheme, bike pool maintenance sessions, social rides to local attractions, and social events including fortnightly ‘green drinks’ at a local pub and Bike to Work breakfasts. The team also promoted cycle safety through campaigns leading to an increase in bike light usage from 59% in October 2016 to 75% in February 2017.
Lara Fahey, University Cycling Officer, said: “Many staff and volunteers have helped to make this happen, and we all look forward to working with Cycling Scotland to build on our progress and making St Andrews an even friendlier place for everyone to cycle.”
