German competition winners announced

Berti Vogts kicks off German Competition at St Andrews

Scotland’s best-known German, Berti Vogts helped the University of St Andrews launch an initiative aimed at increasing interest in the German language amongst Scottish school pupils.

The University’s Department of German hosted its first annual German recitation contest for school children from all over Scotland and the national football team’s manager was on hand to present the prizes.

The Annual German Competition for Schools in Scotland was held in St Andrews yesterday (Wednesday 18th of June 2003).

The recitation contest was aimed at pupils studying German at all levels. The afternoon event involved a series of readings, recitations and role-playing in which performers were judged on pronunciation, fluency, expressiveness, acting skills and originality.

Over 100 entrants from 17 schools throughout Scotland attended, including Hutcheson’s Grammar School (Glasgow), Fettes College (Edinburgh), St Saviours High School (Dundee), Buckhaven High School (Leven), Morrison’s Academy (Crieff) and Madras College (St Andrews).

Winners of the event, sponsored by Duden Verlagshaus, Goethe Institute Glasgow, Houghton Mifflin Publishers, Präsenz Schweiz (PRS) and the Swiss Embassy in London, were awarded cash prizes of up to £100 and all participants were presented with certificates.

The winners were:

Junior Level 1st prize (£50): Jan Colhoun, Andrew Davidson, Mark Wilkinson – Role-Play (Hutchesons’ Grammar School) 2nd prize (£40): Victoria Bruce – Prose (Glenwood High School) 3rd prize (£30): Catherine Reeves – Poetry (Fettes College)

Intermediate Level: 1st prize (£75): Matthew Barnes – Poetry (Belmont House School) 2nd prize (£60): Andrew Tickell, Andrew Lockie, Michael Ford, Dina Fouad – Role-Play (Hutchesons’ Grammar School) 3rd prize (£45): Emma Todd – Poetry (The Mary Erskine School)

Senior Level: 1st prize (£100): Laura Imrie – Prose (The Mary Erskine School) 2nd prize (£80): Fergus Reoch – Poetry (The High School of Glasgow) 3rd prize (£60): Gillian Lester – (The Mary Erskine School)
