Honorary degrees

The following individuals will be awarded honorary degrees by the University of St Andrews later this week.

Six graduation ceremonies will be held on Wednesday 20 June, Thursday 21 June and Friday 22 June 2001 in Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews.

1. Wednesday 20 June 2001 – 10.30am – Graduation Address by Dr Brian Lang, Principal and Vice- Chancellor

Mr James Naughtie – Journalist and Broadcaster – Doctor of Laws – Laureation by Professor Paul Wilkinson, Department of International Relations

Mr Ernest Ransome III – Chairman of the Board of Giles and Ransome Inc – Doctor of Laws – Laureation by Mr David Corner, Secretary and Registrar

2. Wednesday 20 June 2001 – 3pm – Graduation Address by Alastair Work, Vice-Principal (Student Services)

Mr Carl Bildt – Former Swedish Prime Minister, United Nations High Representative – Doctor of Laws – Laureation by Professor Colin Vincent, Master and Deputy Principal

Dr James MacMillan – Composer – Doctor of Music – Laureation by Dr Frank C Quinault, Director of Learning and Teaching Support

3. Thursday 21 June 2001 – 10.30am – Graduation Address by Professor Colin Vincent, Master and Deputy Principal

Professor Ian Kidd – Emeritus Professor of Greek, University of St. Andrews – Doctor of Letters – Laureation by Professor Philip Esler, Vice-Principal and Provost

Dr Sheena McDonald – Writer, Broadcaster and Journalist – Doctor of Letters – Laureation by Dr Verity Brown, Head of School of Psychology

4. Thursday 21 June 2001 – 3pm – Graduation Address by Alastair Work, Vice-Principal (Student Services)

Professor Patrick Bateson – Professor of Ethology, University of Cambridge and Provost of King’s College – Doctor of Science – Laureation by Professor Jill Harries, Chairman of Ancient History

Dr Bridget Ogilvie DBE – Visiting Professor, University College, London – Doctor of Science – Laureation by Professor Keith Sillar, Head of School of Biology

5. Friday 22 June 2001 – 10.30am – Graduation Address by Professor Colin Vincent, Master and Deputy Principal

Dr Campbell Christie CBE – Convener, Scottish Civic Forum and Former General Secretary, Scottish Trades Union Congress – Doctor of Laws – Laureation by Professor John Beath, Acting Head of School of Social Sciences

Mr Jolyon Connell – Founder and Editor of The Week and Money Week – Doctor of Letters – Laureation by Mr Alastair Work, Vice- Principal (Student Services)

6. Friday 22 June 2001 – 3pm – Graduation Address by Dr Brian Lang, Principal and Vice- Chancellor

Ms Bridget Kendall MBE – BBC Diplomatic Correspondent – Doctor of Laws – Laureation by Professor Nick Rengger, Department of International Relations

NOTE TO EDITORS

Photocalls will take place on St Salvator’s lawn, to the west of Younger Hall, after each ceremony (which will last approximately 1.5 hours). In the event of poor weather, photocalls will take place in St Salvator’s Chapel.
