Jack Vettriano scholarship

Wednesday 12 May 2004

World renowned Scottish artist Jack Vettriano is to fund a scholarship at the University of St Andrews.

Jack is donating £75,000, over the next three years, to establish an endowment which will fund a student who would otherwise be unable to attend University. A Jack Vettriano Scholar will be appointed every four years with the first taking up their studies in September 2004.

The endowment follows Jack’s financial contribution towards the transformation of the Students Association’s Old Union Coffee Bar in 2002 and his involvement in previous student fashion shows. Jack was also awarded a Doctor of Letters by the University last summer.

Jack said, “I very much enjoy my relationship with the University, from my involvement with the first student fashion show to receiving an honorary degree last year which is very important to me. I feel extremely positive about the place every time I visit and I feel that I’d like to give something back, with the proviso that the scholarship is given to someone with a background not dissimilar to mine – someone who, for one reason or another, would not ordinarily be able to go to University¿.

The University set scholarship endowments as a priority for the Development Office due to the lasting nature of gifts.

Stephen Magee, Director of Admissions and Vice-Principal (External Relations) said, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to use bursaries to recruit top talent to St Andrews, thanks to the generosity of University graduates and friends such as Jack Vettriano¿. ENDS
