‘Leaders of the future’

Wednesday 13 March 2013

Five leading lights at the University of St Andrews have joined an elite group of academics in Scotland.

The group of researchers are the latest to be elected to the RSE Young Academy of Scotland (YAS), which brings together the most able and innovative young academics and professionals in Scotland.

The five academics have been selected on the basis of their ability to develop a coherent and influential voice on behalf of the most talented people of their generation.

The St Andrews group was selected alongside 45 fellow academics and practitioners from around Scotland, joining the 68 existing members already in place since the launch of YAS in 2011.

The researchers, Catherine Suzanne Julienne Cazin (School of Chemistry), Chris Jones (School of English), Per Ola Kristensson (School of Computer Science), Christian Rutz (School of Biology) and Andrew Richard Timming (Management), will take up their positions formally from 1 April.

Almost two hundred applications were received for membership this year. Applications were considered by RSE Fellows and the trustees of the Young Academy.

Officially announcing the new awards, Professor Alice Brown, General Secretary of the RSE said, “The RSE is delighted with the progress that the Young Academy has made since it was established in 2011 and I am sure that this new cohort of members will strengthen the YAS further.

“The members of the Young Academy are people who have already achieved much at relatively early stages of their careers. Bringing talented people from a range of backgrounds together to discuss how to tackle the challenges of the modern age is a key component of the strategy of the RSE to promote a New Enlightenment in Scotland.

“I fully expect many of the members of the Young Academy to become the leaders of the future in Scotland.”
