MUSA celebrates its first birthday

Thursday 26 November 2009

MUSA – the Museum of the University of St Andrews – celebrates its first birthday this weekend with a special series of family events, after being awarded 4 stars by Visit Scotland as a top class visitor attraction.

To mark the special occasion and to celebrate the St Andrews Day Festival, the museum will be hosting special family events on Saturday 28th November.

From 1pm-3pm come along to make your own MUSA birthday badge, and at 3pm the Learning Loft will transform into a cinema for a family screening of the accalimed 3D animation film, Coraline.

Using technology inspired by early 3D photography work first carried out in St Andrews by Sir David Brewster, the film afternoon will commemorate a fascinating Scottish invention – the lenticular stereoscope, and give guests the chance to handle a range of 3D viewers.

MUSA’s first year of operations has seen positive feedback received from a wide range of visitors, for both the design of the museum and the community and schools programme based in the Learning Loft.

Recently commended by Visit Scotland as a top class visitor attraction, the museum has been awarded 4 stars through their Quality Assurance Scheme, signifying ‘excellence’.

The assessment team especially commended MUSA for its “excellent and innovative” gallery interactives, and the museum’s “excellent interpretive panels”.

In addition the Family Backpack, Viewing Terrace with stunning views, the Talking Telescope and MUSA’s range of merchandise were all praised.

Both birthday events on Saturday 28th November are free and open to the public.  To book a place for the Coraline viewing please ring 01334 461663 or email [email protected].

MUSA, which can be found at 7A The Scores, will open for extended hours on Saturday 28th, Sunday 29th and Monday 30th November, from 10am – 5pm each day. For further details ring 01334 461660
