New beginnings

St Andrews student Alastair Stokes captured an evocative black and white image during a field trip near Oban.

Alastair is the first winner of a new photographic competition launched late last year by the School of Geography and Geosciences. The idea was to inspire the School’s students to capture a meaningful and striking image of their research.

Organisers, led by Graeme Sandeman and Bill Austin, aim to run the competition again later this year.

The winners were:

First prize (£50 book voucher)
