New Librarian appointed
The University of St Andrews has appointed Mr John MacColl as University Librarian and Director of Library Services.
Mr MacColl joins the staff of St Andrews from the Research Libraries Group where he is currently European Director. He takes up post on 7 February 2011.
John is an alumnus of St Andrews having graduated with a First in English Language and Literature in 1983. He completed his qualifications in Librarianship and Information Studies at Robert Gordon University and has a Masters of Education from the University of Aberdeen. He is enormously experienced in the management of libraries and has worked in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Abertay university libraries and also in a senior post at the Aberdeen University computing centre.
At Edinburgh he was responsible for digital and e-resources and directed a major Science and Engineering library and information project; at Glasgow he was project officer for a national initiative to help libraries use the Janet network; and at Abertay he was deputy librarian responsible for all Reader Services.
University Proctor Professor Peter Clark said, “We are delighted to welcome John to the University as Librarian and Director of Library Services and we look forward to his leadership of our excellent library staff to meet the exciting but demanding times ahead.”
Mr MacColl said, “I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed to the post of University Librarian and Director of Library Services in a university which means a great deal to me for many reasons. As Scotland’s first university the library has a long and distinguished collecting history.
“As one of the UK’s top universities for research and teaching, the library needs to face the challenge of matching up to the prestige and quality of its Schools and Departments. And as the university in which I took my first degree, I am thrilled at the opportunity to improve the library experience for all users through the welcome current investment in physical redevelopment and collections.”
