Recognition for success of Summer School students
Over 20 students who have made the transition from school, college or work into University were congratulated for their achievements at a reception at the University of St Andrews today (Wednesday 25 September 2002).
The group, part-funded by the Royal Bank of Scotland, have successfully completed a four-week course on the University’s Access Summer School, aimed at helping them develop and refine their study skills.
Aimed at school leavers, mature students and students from further education colleges, the Summer School ran this year from the 19th August to 13th September. It is targeted at those who have the proven academic potential to succeed at University but who, for reasons outside their own control, may not have gained the traditional entry requirements.
The Royal Bank of Scotland generously provided £10,000 to support the 22 students, providing each with a bursary of over £400 to support their travel and living costs throughout the course. The Royal Bank also funds 15 bursaries worth £1,000 each as part of its commitment to widening access to university.
Stan Farrow, Associate Director of Admissions at the University of St Andrews said:
“We are particularly pleased that the Royal Bank of Scotland has so generously supported the hard work of the Access Summer School students. Without this support, many of the students would have certainly found attendance at Summer School to be impossible”.
Meanwhile, Sir George Mathewson, Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group said:
“Our support for both the summer schools and access bursaries is part of our long term commitment to education and to social inclusion. The Royal Bank recognises that financial and social factors can prevent many young people from fulfilling their educational potential and that the best and brightest come from all sections of the community.”
Summer School tutors, other members of University staff and representatives of the Royal Bank of Scotland were present at today’s reception.
Stephanie Allison of the Royal Bank of Scotland, presented certificates of achievement to the successful students to mark the support given by the Royal Bank in supporting their goal of winning a place at the University of St Andrews.
