Shadow Defence Secretary to visit University

Dr Liam Fox MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, is to visit the University of St Andrews next week to give a lecture on relations with Iran.

Dr Fox will deliver the public lecture entitled `Britain and Iran: Mutual recognition of shared interests’ on Monday (25 February 2008).

Professor Ali Ansari, Director of the University’s Institute for Iranian Studies will chair the event at 12pm at Parliament Hall, South Street, St Andrews.

The free lecture is open to the public – tickets are available from the University of St Andrews, Old Union Reception, 79 North Street, St Andrews.

The Institute for Iranian Studies at the University of St Andrews was launched on 31 October 2006 by former President of Iran Seyyed Mohammad Khatami. The Institute is home to a collection of 12,000 books, housed in the University’s main library. The collection is the largest resource of its kind in the United Kingdom and forms the basis of research and teaching in all aspects of Iranian Studies at the University.

Professor Ali Ansari is Professor of Modern History at the University of St Andrews. His books include, `Iran, Islam and Democracy: the politics of managing change’, `Modern Iran, and Confronting Iran’. His research interests are focused on the political development of modern Iran, as well as Iran’s relations with the West from the early modern period. He is currently working on a book about Iranian nationalism with a particular focus on competing ideologies and political myths.
