St Andrews is best in UK for teaching

Tuesday 3 June 2014

The University of St Andrews is the best university in the United Kingdom after Oxbridge and top in Scotland again, according to a new higher education league table published today (Tuesday June 3rd 2014.)

The Guardian University Guide 2015 places St Andrews 3rd in the UK – equalling the university’s highest ever finish in a national ranking.

The Guardian Guide ranks universities by the strength of teaching, student satisfaction, expenditure per student, student/staff ratio, career prospects, entry tariff, value-added and academic feedback.

St Andrews is judged the best in the United Kingdom for student satisfaction with the quality of teaching.

The university’s academic schools also performed very strongly in individual rankings. Physics and Astronomy, International Relations, Computer Science and Mathematics were all top in the UK, while Earth and Marine Sciences, Art History and Management secured 2nd places.

Philosophy, History, Chemistry, Biosciences, Geography, Divinity, English, Anthropology, Psychology and Modern Languages were all ranked in the UK top 5. St Andrews improved its institutional level scores in student satisfaction, the career prospects of its students and its student/staff ratio.

The result comes less than a month after St Andrews was endorsed as the leading UK multi-faculty university after Oxford and Cambridge by The Complete University Guide 2015.

St Andrews Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Louise Richardson said:

“While we are all aware of the limitations of league tables, it is, by any measure, a considerable achievement to be ranked first in the United Kingdom for student satisfaction with the quality of our teaching.

“I am absolutely delighted that so many of our Schools have been judged to be the best, or among the best, in the country. This has been a team effort. Academic success is only possible with the engagement of talented and committed students and the support of colleagues in our service units whose dedication to the university is unrivalled.

“Given the wealth and size of so many of our top ten UK competitors, this is a notable result for St Andrews, a vindication of our small scale high quality approach, an indication of where we are going as a university, and an endorsement of the quality of Scottish higher education.”
