St Andrews students the most satisfied in Scotland
St Andrews students have voted their university the best in the country, according to the results of the National Student Survey published today (Tuesday 13 August 2013).
The University of St Andrews is ranked the top multi-faculty university in Scotland and joint second in the UK in the 2013 NSS.
It is the eighth year in succession that St Andrews has performed strongly in the annual measure of how satisfied students are with the quality of their higher education experience.
St Andrews is up seven places on last year’s survey and one place behind the University of Bath which leads the 2013 survey with a student satisfaction level of 94%. St Andrews shares top spot in Scotland with The Open University.
With 93% of students at St Andrews declaring themselves satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of their university education, the Fife institution has nudged ahead of Cambridge (fourth) and Oxford (fifth) and is the only Scottish university in the top ten.
The survey compilers canvassed the opinions of around 265,000 final-year students at Higher Education Institutions across the UK. Students were asked to respond to over twenty questions which covered topics such as teaching, personal development, assessment and feedback, learning resources and the management of their University.
St Andrews students gave the University top marks for course teaching, the organisation and management of their university, and academic support.
Linda Gibson, from Dundee, who took part in the NSS and graduated from St Andrews this summer said:
“Coming to St Andrews was the best decision of my life and has provided me with many wonderful and exciting opportunities. My experiences – both academic and extra-curricular – have increased my employability and have prepared me with the skills needed for my career after university.”
St Andrews Vice-Principal and Proctor, Professor Lorna Milne, said: “These results are a welcome and continuing vote of confidence in the quality of our teaching staff and the close contact they have with our students in St Andrews.
“I’m very proud of the standards our students achieve and it is gratifying to see them rate their university equally highly.”
The NSS 2013 also rated individual subjects at universities for student satisfaction. St Andrews was number one in the UK for Physics and Astronomy, Computer Science and Molecular Biology, Biophysics and Biochemistry.
Biology, Medicine and French also scored very highly.
