Students dig deep for charity

Thursday 25 November 2004

St Andrews students raised over £5,000 for Children In Need in just one weekend.

The St Andrews Charities Campaign held street collections in Perth, Dundee and St Andrews and organised a disco in the Students Union when a brave male student had his head shaved and raised over £150 in the process.

The grand total from last weekend’s fundraising drive was £5090.47.

This weekend, the campaign have organised a fun run and Santa’s grotto as part of the town’s St Andrew’s Week celebrations. The fun run takes place at 10am on Sunday at West Sands. Santa will be in the Old Union Coffee bar on North Street from 11am until 4.30pm, before switching on the Christmas lights in Church Square.

Chris Marks, Campaign Convener said, “We’re extremely pleased by the response of our collections in Perth, Dundee and St Andrews. At points, we had people literally throwing money at us. Pudsey’s Party, held in Venue 1 on Friday night, was also a huge success. Everyone had a great time, particularly those who had been sponsored to do things like having their head shaved. The Charities Campaign wishes to thank everyone who helped, took part or donated over the weekend. Without them, we would not have raised such an incredible sum. We are all looking forward to our Santa’s Grotto and Chariots of Fire Fun Run this weekend as part of St Andrews Week. We hope these will be just as successful.”
