Summer graduation celebrations begin in St Andrews

A week-long celebration began today (Monday 29 June 2026), as the town welcomed the first of more than 2,200 graduating students from 80 countries, from Scotland to South Korea, who will cross the stage in the Younger Hall over the next five days.

Today’s ceremony honoured not only achievement, but the journey behind it. Among those recognised was musician, educator and broadcaster Richard Michael BEM, awarded a Doctor of Music (DMus). Through decades of teaching, performing and sharing jazz with wider audiences, from founding the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra to presenting BBC Radio Scotland’s Jazz Nights, his impact has shaped generations of musicians across Scotland and beyond.

Addressing the Class of 2026, he offered a reminder to enjoy life:

“It doesn’t matter what degree, where you are in rank and position, if you’re not enjoying yourself, you’re not going to be happy. Enjoy yourself. It’s absolutely vital.”
