Top Scots to be awarded honorary degrees

Four top Scots are to be awarded honorary degrees by the University of St Andrews this Friday.

Renowned fiddler Aly Bain, The Right Hon. Lady Cosgrove, Senator of the College of Justice and the Very Reverend Iain MacMillan, Minister of St Giles’, the High Kirk of Edinburgh will receive their degrees during the St Andrew’s Day Graduation Ceremony.

They will be joined later by NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson, who will receive his degree after delivering the St Andrew’s Day lecture in the evening.

The St Andrew’s Day ceremony will take place at 2.15pm in Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews on Friday 28th November 2003 and the lecture will take place at 7.30pm in the evening.

FRIDAY 28TH NOVEMBER 2003 – 2.15PM – GRADUATION ADDRESS BY DR BRIAN LANG, PRINCIPAL AND VICE- CHANCELLOR

* Ally Bain Fiddle Player – Doctor of Music (Mus D) – Laureation by Alastair Work, Secretary of the University.

* Right Hon. Lady Cosgrove Senator of the College of Justice – Doctor of Laws (LLD) – Laureation by Ann Kettle, Department of Mediaeval History.

* The Very Reverend Iain MacMillan, Minister of St Giles’, the High Kirk of Edinburgh – Doctor of Letters (D Litt). – Laureation by Professor Ron Piper, Vice- Principal (Teaching).

FRIDAY 28TH NOVEMBER 2003 – 7.30pm – THE ST ANDREW’S DAY INTERNATIONAL LECTURE

Lord Robertson will deliver the St Andrew’s Day International Lecture “Can NATO Make the World Safer?”, after which he will be conferred his honorary degree:

* The Rt Hon Lord Robertson of Port Ellen – The Secretary General of NATO – Doctor of Laws (LLD) – Laureation by Professor John Hudson, School of History.

In addition to the Graduation ceremony, the University will formally induct its new Professors. They are:
