Town and Gown event

The Principal of the University of St Andrews Professor Sally Mapstone this week (Tuesday 22 January) welcomed representatives from more than 100 local societies, clubs and groups to an event to celebrate the relationship between the University and the town.

In her welcoming address Professor Mapstone said that the many strands of activity that bind Town and Gown will get a boost from the University’s new strategy, which was launched this October and looks ahead to the next five years.

“It sets out our ambitions to expand our portfolio of world-leading research, become more diverse and inclusive, grow our international influence, develop stronger links with industry, and embed a new culture of entrepreneurship among students and staff,” she said.

“A University social responsibility statement connects the different themes of the Strategy and also connects us to the town, our home. We’ve chosen to put this social responsibility statement right at the front of the strategy document as a clear signal to all that this place matters and that we will continue to work to sustain our links to it.

“Our social responsibility statement commits us to supporting local business and community wherever possible.”
