University showcases sustainability progress in 2023-2024 report
The University of St Andrews has released its 2023-2024 Sustainability Report, which offers a comprehensive overview of its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
With a foreword by Principal and Vice-Chancellor of St Andrews, Professor Dame Sally Mapstone DBE FRSE, the report provides detailed carbon emissions data for Scopes 1, 2, and 3, alongside a wide variety of cross-institutional case studies highlighting the university’s alignment with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
As part of its transparency efforts, the University continues to fulfil its obligations under the Public Bodies Climate Change Duties (PBCCD) report, in accordance with the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009. This annual report tracks the University’s carbon emissions.
Notably, the University’s Scope 1, or direct, emissions reflect a modest reduction in gas use, with biomass output now reported within this category, as recommended by the Sustainable Scotland Network, EAUC, and peer institutions. In Scope 2 emissions (those resulting from purchased energy) there is a slight decrease in electricity consumption across non-residential buildings. While carbon emissions from overseas travel under Scope 3 remain a challenge, emissions from purchased goods have decreased, underscoring the institution’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
The report also highlights the extensive sustainability initiatives led by various Schools, units, and Transition University of St Andrews. These efforts illustrate the creativity and energy driving the University community’s approach to the UN SDGs, showcasing how deeply sustainability is embedded within the University’s ethos.
The Master of the United College, who leads on sustainability governance, Professor Ineke De Moortel noted: “The University’s dedication to sustainability is not only integral to its operations but also pivotal in shaping its future direction. I am proud of our colleague’s achievements and encouraged by the direction we are taking in pursuit of our ambitious goal to reach net zero emissions by 2035.”
