Eat Safe record at St Andrews

Friday 8 December 2006

The University of St Andrews is celebrating after being awarded a record number of Eat Safe Awards for its Halls of Residences.

The University was successful in being the largest number of multiple premises within one organisation in Scotland, to receive the national awards.

Staff from the University’s Catering Services and Residences were presented with the awards recently by Fife Council in partnership with the Food Standards Agency Scotland (FSAS).

Since the awards were launched in late 2005, Fife have led the way in Scotland with over sixty-five out of the 260 Eat Safe premises accredited nationally, within the thirty-two Scottish Local Authorities.

Eat Safe is a sign that the food outlet is taking every precaution and is observing the highest standards of Food Safety Management.

Hamish Johnston, the University’s Head of Support Services, said, “We are delighted to have received accreditation for the high standards of food safety that we work to in the University. These awards are a credit to all our staff and their work.”

All Eat Safe awardees are listed on the websites of the Food Standards Agency Scotland, Fife Council and the Scottish Tourist Board all of which are accessible to the general public.

The awards complement strict new EU food legislation which came into force on January 1, 2006.
