Going live! Students to launch radio station
St Andrews students are set to launch their very first student radio station, broadcasting on 87.7 FM from the Students’ Union, throughout the town.
From 28 February to 13 March 2005, St Andrews University Radio – ‘Star FM’ – will broadcast music and chat as well as showcasing the various talents of St Andrews students. The station will be on air for six hours a day, with a breakfast show from 8am – 10am, an evening show from 7pm – 9pm, and then a range of late night shows from 11pm – 1am.
While the daytime shows will be focused around emerging local and national music, as well as mainstream chart music, the schedule will also include comedy, poetry, historical and religious programming, all written, produced and recorded by St Andrews students.
The students behind the venture, Sandy Walker and Steve Pidcock, are convinced that a student radio station will be a valuable asset to the student population, and the University: “This station will provide a great opportunity for anyone who’s ever wanted to get behind a mike and try their hand at broadcasting, as well as offering a great deal of entertainment to the students who will listen to it. If this two- week trial goes well, and we are sure it will, then the plan is to extend the licence next time, until we have a permanent student station, broadcasting across St Andrews, 7 days a week.”
The radio station will be funded by the University, the Students’ Association, the Rector’s Charitable Fund and advertising revenue.
