Graduation gears up

The annual St Andrew’s Day Graduation Ceremony at the University of St Andrews will kick off next week (Wednesday 30th November) with awards being given to a host of well-known names, both inside and outside the University.

Honorary degrees will be conferred upon footballing legend Denis Law, former rector Sir Clement Freud and The Very Rev Professor D W (Bill) Shaw.

Meanwhile, the second University medal will be presented to Dr Dave Roberts, formerly one of Student Support Services’ Assistant Directors.

It will also be a special occasion for Chancellor Sir Kenneth Dover, who will confer degrees upon all new graduates for the last time before he steps down after 24 years.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Dr Brian Lang will deliver the graduation address, while laureations will be given by Professor Philip Winn (Denis Law), Dr Ian Bradley (Professor Shaw) and Alex Yabroff (Sir Clement Freud). Chris Lusk, the Director of Student Support Services, will give the citation for Dave Roberts, who is being rewarded for his services to the University and its students.

During the ceremony the University’s nineteen new Professors will also be formally inducted. They are: Professor John Anderson (International Relations), Professor Rens Bod (Computer Science), Professor Ian Bonnell (Physics and Astronomy), Professor Trevor Gibbs (Bute Medical School), Professor Philip Hammond (Biology), Professor Julie Harris (Psychology), Professor Richard Iggo (Bute Medical School), Professor Dina Iordanova (Modern Languages), Professor Paul Kamer (Chemistry), Professor Oliver Kirchkamp (Economics and Finance), Professor Kevin Laland (Biology), Professor Steve Linton (Computer Science), Professor Roger Mason (History), Professor Timothy Mulgan (Philosophical and Anthropological Studies), Professor Andrew Murphy (English), Professor Daniel Nolan (Philosophical and Anthropological Studies), Professor Alexandra Slawin (Chemistry), Professor John Wilson (Management) and Professor David Perrett (Psychology), who will be made a Wardlaw Professor.

The ceremony will take place in Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews at 3pm.
