Figures from the world of science, literature and academia are to be honoured by the University of St Andrews this summer (June 2016).

Former Principal, Professor Louise Richardson, and graphic novelist and screenwriter, Neil Gaiman, are among those to be awarded honorary degrees by the University.

Professor Richardson was the University’s 10th Principal and Vice-Chancellor, from January 2009 until December 2015.

They are among nine distinguished individuals to be honoured during the University’s summer graduation ceremonies which will be held from 21 to 24 June at the Younger Hall.

This summer’s honorands are:

Mr Neil Gaiman – novelist, graphic novelist and screenwriter

Professor Herman Van Rompuy – Emeritus President of the European Council; Minister of State (Belgium)

Professor Rita Colwell – Distinguished University Professor, University of Maryland, College Park and Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health

Professor Jean Beggs – Royal Society Darwin Trust Research Professor and Professor of Molecular Biology, University of Edinburgh

Professor John Dudley – Professor of Physics, University of Franche-Comté, France

Professor Emma Rothschild – Professor of History, Harvard University

Professor Louise Richardson – Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford; formerly Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews (from 2009 to 2015)

Professor Sir Geoffrey Lloyd – Emeritus Professor of Ancient Philosophy and Science, University of Cambridge

Professor Peter Sarnak – Professor of Mathematics, Princeton University and The Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton

The University’s recently retired Bedellus, John Jardine, will be awarded the University Medal during the summer ceremonies.
