New athletics facilities ‘on track’

Wednesday 22 September 2004

New athletics facilities at the University of St Andrews will be unveiled by former Olympics sprinter and local MP Menzies Campbell next week (Wednesday 29th Sept, 2004).

Next week’s event is on track to be an evening of fun-filled athletics open to local children and adults. During the opening event, budding athletes are invited to try out the new facilities (or set new track records!) in a range of individual and relay races, track and field events.

The events are open to anyone to enter on the night, with a 100m sprint and 100m relay in three age categories (primary school, secondary school and adult). Any group can get together to form a 100m relay team. There will also be a 1500m race for secondary school children and adults.

Dr Martin Farrally, Director of Sport and Exercise at the University, said:

“We now have excellent training facilities for athletics and these facilities are equally available for the local community and university students. This should provide a real shot in the arm for athletics in East Fife.”

The new facilities in place are for throwing and jumping events and will see the completion of the full range of athletics facilities available to the University and the local community.

The athletics track, opened in 1997, is part of the public sports complex which sits alongside the University Sports Centre. The complex also includes an Astropitch, tennis courts and cricket nets. Funding for the field events facilities was provided jointly from National Lottery Funds, Fife Council and from alumni and friends of the University through the Appeal Fund.

The opening event will take place on Wednesday 29th Sept, 2004 between 5.30pm and 8pm.
