Sir Menzies Campbell to be installed as Chancellor
The new Chancellor of the University of St Andrews will be officially installed this weekend.
Liberal Democrat leader, and North- East Fife MP, the Rt Hon Sir Menzies Campbell will be installed on Saturday 22 April 2006. During the ceremony, Sir Menzies will be conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. Honorary degrees will also be awarded to BBC newsreader Anna Ford, conservationist Dame Jennifer Jenkins and the Rt Hon Lord Brian Gill.
Sir Menzies will replace Sir Kenneth Dover who retired from office on 1 January 2006 after 25 years in post. The Chancellor is the titular head of the University of St Andrews. His duties include conferring degrees, promoting the University’s image throughout the world and furthering its interests, both within Scotland and beyond.

Anna Ford, who will be made a Doctor of Letters, was independent television’s first female newsreader and has become one of the most popular and experienced presenters in British television.
Lord Gill, Scotland’s second-most senior judge, is to receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws. Appointed a judge in 1994, he was chairman of the Scottish Law Commission from 1996 until 2001. Lord Gill was appointed Lord Justice Clerk in November 2001.He is also chairman of the board of governors of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
Dame Jennifer Jenkins, widow of former Home Secretary and SDP leader Lord Jenkins of Hillhead, is to be conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Science. A champion of consumer interests and a leading figure in conservation, her offices and appointments have been many and varied. She chaired the Consumers’ Association and the Historic Buildings Council for England and is an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
The installation ceremony will take place at 4pm in Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews.
