St Andrews among top in the world for arts and humanities
The University of St Andrews is one of the top 50 universities in the world for research and teaching in the arts and humanities in new international rankings published today (Wednesday 16 October 2019).
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 reveal that St Andrews is ranked 47th in the world for arts and humanities, a rise of seven places from last year. The Faculty of Arts at St Andrews comprises of nine schools; Art History, Classics, Economics, English, History, International Relations, Management, Modern Languages, and Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies.
THE ranks universities by five broad indicators; Teaching, Research, International Outlook, Income from Industry and Citations with over 500 universities globally ranked.
For Teaching, which focuses on the learning environment and the staff-student ratio at the University, St Andrews is ranked 39th in the world, an increase of four places from 2018.
For Research, which measures a university’s reputation for research excellence, the University is ranked 52 in the world, up from 59 last year. This increase further cements St Andrews’ position as a world leader on critical global issues, recognised worldwide for the quality of its research.
The University of St Andrews is 70th in the world for International Outlook, which ranks the ability of a university to attract undergraduates, postgraduates and faculty from all over the world, which is key to its success on the global stage.
The Times Higher rankings complete a successful year for the University which has seen it named UK University of the Year by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020. St Andrews is also ranked the top university in Scotland and second to Cambridge in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2020 and top in Scotland in the Complete University Guide 2020.
While sector rankings place St Andrews at the top of the main higher education league tables, the University is also top in the UK for student academic experience in the National Student Survey 2019.
