St andrew’s day celebrations

Musical, political and medical achievers, sixty-five students and eight academics are among those receiving formal recognition at a St Andrew’s Day ceremony later this month (St Andrew’s Day – Friday 30 November 2001).

As well as the conferment of student degrees, the afternoon event in Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews will see the induction of University professors and the presentation of honorary degrees to six of Scotland’s key players. Principal and Vice- Chancellor of the University Dr Brian Lang will give the graduation address.

Honorary degrees will be presented to Tam Dalyell MP (Doctor of Laws); Sheena Wellington, the Fife singer who performed at the opening of the Scottish Parliament (Doctor of Music); Scottish businessman Ronald Alexander (Doctor of Laws); Peter Burt, Governor of the Bank of Scotland/Executive Deputy Chairman of HBOS plc (Doctor of Laws); Sir Philip Ledger, Principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (Doctor of Music); and Lord Patel, Chair of the Clinical Standards Board for Scotland and Consultant/Honorary Professor at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee (Doctor of Science).

Meanwhile, the academics to be inducted as Professors are Professor Sarah Broadie (School of Philosophical and Anthropological Studies); Professor Huw Davies (School of Social Sciences); Professor M. Daphne Hampson (School of Divinity); Professor Stephen Lee (School of Physics and Astronomy); Professor James Naismith (School of Chemistry); Professor Christopher Todd (School of Biology); Professor Patricia Willmer (School of Biology) and Professor Ifor Samuel (School of Physics and Astronomy).

On 29 November 2001, the 2001 St Andrews International Lecture for Global Peace and Security will be delivered by Mr Giandomenico Picco, Personal Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Year of Dialogue among Civilizations.
