St Andrew’s day graduation

Musicians, students and staff will be honoured next week at the University of St Andrews St Andrew’s Day graduation ceremony (Tuesday 30 November 2004).

Sir Richard Armstrong CBE, Conductor and Music Director at Scottish Opera and Dr Ian Bostridge CBE, Tenor will join over 130 graduating students and 11 new Professors when they receive honorary degrees of Doctor of Music.

Meanwhile, recently retired University photographer Peter Adamson will be the first ever recipient of the new University medal. The award can be made to current or former members of staff, alumni of the University or members of the local community.

The medal was designed by Lorraine Fraser, Academic Registrar in conjunction with Professor Ian Carradice, Head of the School of Art History and was approved by the Senate Business Committee. Two inches in diameter, it comprises the University crest in enamel on a gilt medal.

A University medal may be awarded to an individual who satisfies one or more of the following criteria – 1. In recognition of a significant personal contribution to the educational, cultural or economic development or to the improvement of the quality of life within St Andrews or North East Fife, 2. In recognition of exceptional service to the University of St Andrews or 3. In recognition of meritorious achievements within 10 years of graduation from the University of St Andrews. Nominations are considered by the Senate Business Committee and approved by Academic Council.

Eleven new professors will also be inducted at the ceremony –

Richard Abbott, Biology Jan Bebbington, Management Michael Bird, Geography and Geosciences Robert Chia, Management Joseph Doherty, Geography and Geosciences Ronald Ferguson, Modern Languages (Italian) Robert Gray, Management Lorna Hutson, English Charles Nolan, Economics and Finance Nikola Ruskuc, Mathematics and Statistics Malcolm White, Biology

The ceremony will take place in Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews at 3pm.

Chancellor Sir Kenneth Dover will confer the degrees.

The graduation address will be given by Principal and Vice- Chancellor Dr Brian Lang.

Frank Quinault will give the laureation address for Sir Richard Armstrong CBE and Professor Tony Lodge will laureate for Dr Ian Bostridge CBE.

The citation for Peter Adamson will be given by Professor Carradice.

Photocalls of Peter Adamson and the honorands only will take place at approx 4.30pm in Lower College Hall, St Salvator’s Quadrangle, North Street, St Andrews (after the ceremony which will last approximately 1.5 hours).
