Top in Scotland, second in the UK and Scottish University of the Year

Friday 16 September 2022

The University of St Andrews is the top university in Scotland and second in the UK in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 published today (Friday 16 September).

The University has also been named as the Scottish University of the Year.

Last year St Andrews was ranked number one in the UK, the first time in the near 30-year history of the Guide, or any UK ranking, that any university has been placed above those of Oxford and Cambridge.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Dame Sally Mapstone FRSE said: “This is another very welcome endorsement of the quality of research-led teaching at St Andrews, and the hard work of all our staff and students, but they would be the first to say that this is not the week for celebration.

“We will in due course be marking this achievement with all in our community.”

The new edition of The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023, a free 96-page supplement, will be published this weekend in The Sunday Times (Sunday 18 September). It provides the definitive rankings for UK universities and the most comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain.

It includes profiles on 135 universities and the definitive UK university rankings, making use of the latest data published in the past two months. A fully searchable website with university profiles and 70 subject tables will be published online today (Friday 16 September) for subscribers to The Times and The Sunday Times.

Issued by the University of St Andrews Communictions Office.
