Top in Scotland again

Thursday 14 June 2012

The Times Good University Guide 2013 places St Andrews 6th best university in the UK in its annual examination of universities.  St Andrews, which was also placed sixth last year, is once again the only Scottish institution to feature in the top ten.

The University features in 25 subject tables, with Physics & Astronomy being ranked second best in the UK.  Twelve other subjects are ranked in the top five and 20 further subjects ranked in the top ten:

They are: Chemistry, Iberian Languages, Mathematics, Middle Eastern & African Studies and Philosophy (4th); Classics, Computer Science, French, German, History and Theology & Religious Studies (5th); Anthropology (6th); Politics (7th); Business Studies, Geology, History of Art, Italian and Medicine (8th) and Russian (9th).

The Times table is the latest league table published so far this year. It follows last month’s publication of The Guardian University Guide 2013, which placed St Andrews 4th in the UK.

In the new listing, universities were rated on student satisfaction, quality of research, staff-student ratio, completion rates and spend per student on services and facilities. The guide also looked at entry standards, the percentage of students gaining good honours and graduate prospects.
