OBE for services to higher education

Thursday 3 January 2002

Ann J Kettle has been awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours list for services to higher education.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Senior Lecturer in Mediaeval History, Ann was “surprised but delighted” to hear the news.

The last ten years have been exciting ones in Ann’s University of St Andrews career which stretches back to 1964 when she was appointed to a lectureship in Mediaeval History. During the 1990’s, she was the University’s Hebdomadar (in charge of student welfare and discipline), the Chair of the Board of the Students’ Association, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Senate Assessor on the University Court.

Outside the University, she has been President of the Association of University Teachers (Scotland), a member of the Scottish (Garrick) Committee of the National Committee (Dearing) of Inquiry into Higher Education and was, for three years, a member of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. While on SHEFC, she was a member of the Mergers Committee, chaired the Strategic Change Grant Assessment Panel, ran the WISET (Women into Science, Engineering and Technology) initiative and was a member of the Small Specialist Institutions Sub-Group of SHEFC.

She is currently on the Steering Group of the Promoting Partnership Initiative with the University of Dundee and has just been appointed a Director of the Arts and Humanities Research Board.
