Philosopher appointed prestigious Professorship

A leading expert in the field of philosophy has been appointed to a prestigious post at the University of St Andrews.

Professor Lloyd Humberstone, currently at Melbourne’s Monash University, has been appointed to a Carnegie Centenary Professorship in Philosophy.

Professor Humberstone is known for his outstanding work in a number of fields in philosophy. A leading expert in formal logic and the philosophy of logic, Professor Humberstone has made a number of highly influential contributions in these areas.

With more than thirty years of prolific publishing in top international journals, he has had a lasting impact on his field worldwide, in particular, in modal logic and its connection to broader issues in metaphysics, epistemology and the philosophy of language.

Professor Humberstone will spend the period March to June 2012 in St Andrews, attached to the Foundations of Logical Consequence project in Arché.

It is hoped that the appointment will benefit the Scottish University community as a whole, through a series of public lectures Professor Humberstone will deliver throughout Scotland.
