The University of St Andrews Business School is proud to announce that Professor Paul Hibbert has been named the inaugural recipient of the John G. Burgoyne Memorial Prize for Management Learning. The award was presented at the British Academy of Management (BAM) Annual Conference on 3 September 2025.

Paul, Professor of Management at St Andrews, was recognised for his pioneering work in reflexive practice and qualitative research methods, which has shaped management and leadership education both in the UK and internationally.

“I was delighted to receive the John G. Burgoyne award because it recognises contributions to theory, pedagogy and practice across a career in management learning,” said Paul. “It is a fitting commemoration of one of the field’s leading figures, and I regard it as the highest honour I could receive.”

He added that, in order to support the next generation of scholars, he has asked BAM to use the £4,000 prize money to create bursaries for doctoral students to attend conferences – opportunities he described as “formative experiences that were important to me at the start of my career.”

The new annual prize, worth £4,000, was created in memory of Professor John G. Burgoyne, a Fellow of BAM who passed away in April 2023. Professor Burgoyne was widely respected for his contributions to advancing management learning. His widow, Trudi Wakeman, has generously funded the award in celebration of his legacy.

The John G. Burgoyne Memorial Prize embraces a broad understanding of management learning, recognising research that is innovative, critical, and impactful. It celebrates scholarship that draws on disciplinary, transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, and that integrates theory, pedagogy, and practice.

Professor Hibbert’s career exemplifies these principles, combining imaginative and rigorous inquiry with a sustained commitment to inspiring scholars, practitioners and policymakers.
