Telecommunications funding

A £2 million, five year funding package has been awarded to the Universities of St Andrews and Heriot-Watt to develop a new Masters degree aimed at meeting the needs of Scotland's booming photonics telecommunications industry.

St Andrews's Day ceremony

Three successful Scots, fourteen academics and around forty students will receive formal recognition of their achievements next week (St Andrew's Day - Thursday 30 November 2000). As well as the conferment of student degrees, the afternoon event in Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews will see the induction of University professors (details attached) and the presentation of honorary degrees to three distinguished Scottish figures.

The University of St Andrews has become the first University in Scotland to win a national hospitality award in honour of its outstanding service to students and other groups.

Closing soon: environment prize

The initial closing date for the St Andrews Prize, an internationally acclaimed initiative aimed at finding new and inspiring ideas to help the environment, is fast approaching. Launched in September 2000, the annual initiative, which is co- sponsored by the University and international energy company Conoco, is offering $25,000, a medal and the encouragement of government, business and academic institutions in return for an innovative and original solution to an environmental problem. There will be additional awards, each of $5,000, for the runners-up.

National recognition for laser expert

A University of St Andrews physicist who is making groundbreaking developments in the world of laser technology has been awarded a prestigious medal by The Royal Society.

The understanding of everything from Parkinson's disease to communication between monkeys will be improved as the University of St Andrews provides scholarships to four new psychology students.
